The Bedford Habitat Community is designed to have both affordable and market rate housing. Planned to be build on the land surrounding the Farmhouse Retrofit project, the six single-family homes feature three different floor plans ranging in size from 1,300 to 1,500 square feet. All homes have an open kitchen, living and dining room layout with one bedroom and bath on the first floor and two bedrooms and bath on the second floor. To achieve the designed 45% reduction in energy use compared to a code built home in 2009, the homes have both high performance enclosures and high efficiency mechanical systems. Market rate homes are also designed to receive a 5 kW photovoltaic (PV) array, which would increase the energy use reduction to 80%.
