Catholic Charities' Green Dream 1 stands as a model for high performance construction in this hot-humid, hurricane prone region. Built on telescoping concrete piers, the home is prepared to handle flooding events and can easily be adjusted should the home settle over time. The 1 ½ story, 1,400 square foot home features closed cell spray foam in the wall cavities, open cell spray foam below the roof deck and rigid insulation attached to the underside of the floor joists. Installed under the stair, the air handler with built-in dehumidifier is centrally located, which facilitates duct layout and air distribution. All 10 windows installed in the home are impact resistant, Low E, double-glazed units. Utility bills from the homeowner indicate the home operates as designed, using 40% less energy than a 2008 code built home, saving the homeowner approximately $1,000 per year.
