The Suwannee River Cottage currently serves as an administration building for the Stephen C. Foster State Park located in the Okefenokee Swamp of southeastern Georgia. The 1,800 square foot single story structure has a traditional cross-section and L-shaped plan that promote passive cooling, natural ventilation and indirect daylighting as well as a site orientation that allows for maximum solar energy collection. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) comprised of rigid insulation between two sheets of OSB form the walls and unvented roof while the unvented conditioned crawlspace houses the high efficiency mechanical system. To augment the high performance enclosure and mechanical system, a 4.1 kW photovoltaic (PV) array is installed on the highly reflective white standing seam metal roof. Compared to a code built structure in 2004, the administration building uses 65% less energy.
